Hike of the week: Tunnel Falls, Oregon

In this installment of “Hike of the Week”, we’ll give you a summary of what to expect at Tunnel Falls, Oregon, one of the local fan favorites. Tunnel Falls is a popular hiking destination located in the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon. If you equip yourself with a rain jacket, some hiking poles, and a hiking pack, (of course, for this we are partial to Life in a Pack and River Country Products), you will be able to explore this beautiful area and take in the stunning views that it has to offer.

The hike to Tunnel Falls begins at the Eagle Creek Trailhead and is approximately 6 miles round trip. The trail takes you through a dense forest, across several bridges, and up steep switchbacks before reaching Tunnel Falls. The trail is well-maintained and marked, making it easy to follow, even for those who are new to hiking.

Having a rain jacket is essential when hiking in Western Oregon as the weather can change quickly and rain is common in the area. A rain jacket will keep you dry and comfortable, allowing you to enjoy the hike in inclement weather.

Hiking poles, or trekking poles, are also a great addition to your gear as they help provide stability and support on the trail. The poles can help you maintain balance on rocky or uneven terrain and take some of the stress off of your knees, especially on the steep inclines and declines along the trail.

A hiking pack is a must-have for any outdoor excursion, and the Tunnel Falls hike is no exception. The pack should be large enough to carry all of your essentials, including food, water, a first-aid kit, and extra clothing layers. A hydration system can also be added to your pack to make it easier to stay hydrated on the trail.

Once you reach Tunnel Falls, you will be able to see why this hike is so popular. The falls are approximately 160 feet tall and drop into a large pool below, surrounded by lush vegetation and towering cliffs. The falls are truly a sight to behold, and you can take a moment to sit and enjoy the view, or even swim in the cool water on a hot day.

In addition to Tunnel Falls, there are many other attractions and hiking trails in the Columbia River Gorge that you can explore. From breathtaking waterfalls to scenic vistas, there is something for everyone in this area. Whether you prefer a challenging hike or a leisurely walk, the Columbia River Gorge has a trail that is perfect for you.

Summing it up, with the bare necessities of a rain jacket, hiking poles, and a hiking pack, you will be able to fully experience the beauty of Tunnel Falls, Oregon. This hike is suitable for people of all skill levels, and with the right gear, you can make the most of your time in the Columbia River Gorge.
